Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration (GVTC)

Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration is a Mechanism for strategic, transboundary, collaborative management of the Greater Virunga Landscape. Set up by ICCN, RDB and UWA with their partners in the region, it started with ranger collaboration to protect mountain gorillas in Mgahinga, Bwindi, Virunga and Volcanoes NPs in 1991. Later it has expanded in scope (tourism, community conservation and research and monitoring). The area also now extends to central and north Virunga (DRC), Queen Elizabeth, Rwenzori Mountains and Semuliki NPs (Uganda). The Executive Secretariat sits from 2008 in Kigali to coordinate and link stakeholders on behalf of the Protected Area Authorities.

Internship Opportunity within GVTC

The Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration (GVTC) is a mechanism for the strategic transboundary collaborative management of the Greater Virunga Landscape, also known as the Central Albertine Rift (CAR) and shared between three countries: the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda and Uganda. The GVTC’s goal is the improved conservation of species, habitats, and ecological services contributing to increased socio-economic benefits to the people of the CAR, through effective transboundary collaboration. GVTC works with and through partners towards synergizing the conservation efforts of the seven National Parks disseminated along the shared boundaries of the three countries.
GVTC is coordinating the implementation of several projects, among those is the NICHE project: “Enhancing capacity in Natural Resource Management and conflict resolution for stability and inclusive growth in the Greater Virunga Landscape” [NICHE/GRL/264], also recognized under the acronym of “the 3 C project” [Conflict, Collaboration, Conservation; i.e: Collaboration for Conflict resolution to ensure Conservation in the GVL].

This project aims at enhancing capacities in Education and Research for Natural Resource Management (NRM) and Conflict Resolution for the regional stability and inclusive growth in the Greater Virunga Landscape (GVL).
This project is also expected to contribute to the development of the GVTC’s Center of Excellency (CoE) which aims at stocking, managing and disseminating all GVL related information (including research results etc.) , and strengthening conservation capacity of the stakeholders involved in the sustainable conservation and natural resource management in the GVL. Through development and setting up of CoE web based portals for information restoring and dissemination].

The internship position

As part of coordinating the implementation of the 3C project, GVTC is offering internship opportunity for one University student, who can avail his / her voluntary services while he/she gains professional experience in a regional conservation institution such as GVTC. This will be a temporary arrangement based on relevant skills pertinent to this position. Through this arrangement, GVTC will be contributing indirectly to conservation related capacity building in the region, while the candidate intern will be motivated to be exposed to conservation work, and gain professional skills that can be beneficial for his / her future career. This internship opportunity will be 3 months renewable.

Tasks to be performed by student intern

Through this position, the student intern with his / her skills and competencies to the overall coordination for the implementation of the 3C project, particularly through handling logistical tacks, French/English interpretation during training sessions, and data handling, and data management for the GVTC’s CoE. Specifically, the candidate intern will expect to perform the following tasks:

• Assist in the overall coordination of the 3C project
• Assist in the organization of the specific activities of 3C projects, mainly the various training sessions
• Ensure translation in English / French (according to needs of participants)
• Ensure appropriate use, safety… of material and equipment used by participants in the trainings
• Drafting reports of trainings
• Assist in the development and functioning of the CoE

o Data management and data base maintenance
o Basic data analysis and result display
o Map production

Profile of ideal candidate

From the above tasks to be performed by the candidate intern, the following is the required profile:

• Proven motivation and willingness to work in a regional / multicultural conservation institution
• The intern should be recently post-graduated (at least Masters level) in the area of Conservation or Natural Resource Management, currently in search for working experience, or a post graduate student in his/her final year of graduation
• Being perfect bilingual : capability to use in speaking and writing both English and French skills to translate simultaneously from one into the other
• Good command of computer use
• Skills in data-bases operation, data management and particularly, versatility with the Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
• Proven skills in large data handling for basic analysis
• Skills in report writing
• Being orderly for keeping records and managing other research data
• Proven skills for oral and written communication
Other competencies
• High integrity, strong result orientation, drive for Excellency and self-motivated
• Excellent team playing abilities and having a keen client focus;
• Proactive with ability to actively listen, and keen interest for learning;
